The English for the Nursing Assistant
Web site was designed to support English as a Second Language (ESL) students who are preparing for certification as a nursing assistant (CNA). The site corresponds to the Communication Skills chapter in many CNA textbooks.
This online module consists of four lessons. Each lesson includes a presentation of the theoretical concepts of communication in lecture form and a presentation of the practical application of those concepts in clinical settings. Students have multiple opportunities to practice:
- listening for main ideas in a lecture and note-taking
- pronouncing key vocabulary as individual words and in the context of a sentence
- reading academic text
- answering multiple choice questions that are similar to those found on the CNA State certification test
- comprehending vocabulary
- using positive speaking and communication skills between a CNA and patients or the LVN
- performing the complete steps of one CNA procedure, that of ambulating the patient.
The target audience is English language learners in a CNA course with high intermediate to advanced English language skills.
